Residents' Perceptions of Gentrification and Related Changes: a Study of Smíchov and Karlín
Columby, Nikola ; Ouředníček, Martin (advisor) ; Kubeš, Jan (referee)
Gentrification is an urban process gone global with many permutations and local specifics. This master's thesis analyses how residents are perceiving gentrification in rapidly developing, post- industrial, inner-city neighbourhoods of Prague - Smíchov and Karlín. The thesis is based on the concept of gentrification as planetary phenomenon that is anchored in a post-socialist context of contemporary Prague. The integral process of displacement is understood as direct but also symbolic, as an attachment to one's neighbourhood. Perception, an individual's filter of understanding and dealing with the world, is used to capture nuances, experiences, and feelings. Using interviews, the thesis seeks to answer the following questions using the underutilized perceptions of regular citizens. How are residents perceiving gentrification and the related changes? Where are residents placing gentrification? Are these findings the same in Smíchov and Karlín or are there differences in the perceptions? Gentrification and displacement are palpable urban processes that the respondents perceive as having changed the neighbourhoods in an impactful way. Karlín is seen as gentrified, whereas in Smíchov the situation is more nuanced. The group most clearly identified as being displaced are the Roma. The gentrifiers are...
Railway Vysočany - Těšnov;commencement, progress, downfall
Balák, Ondřej ; Pokorný, Jiří (advisor) ; Šindelář, Jan (referee)
The aim of the present thesis is to describe the origin, evolution and decline of the end section of the railway line Vysočany-Těšnov. In more general terms it provides an introduction into the construction of the railway lines at the end of the 19th century in Prague, records specific preparatory and construction works in the section of Vysočany-Těšnov, and briefly informs on the issue of passenger and freight transport on this line. Railroad buildings and other structures which have been connected with the above line, as well as some of those which have survived to the present are analysed within the thesis. The final chapter focuses on the question of the destruction of the Těšnov railway station building. Another approach to this issue is an attempt to compare the conditions of the railway body and its surroundings at the time of the operation and at present. To this end, period and present-day maps were employed, in addition to the field research carried out on the still preserved remaining parts of the railway line.

Nedbalová, Zuzana ; Semotanová, Eva (advisor) ; Novotný, Michal (referee)
This diploma thesis, entitled Inner Peripheries of contemporary Prague in the archives documents - trends and sonds, deals with changes originally separated urban areas located outside Prague, which went through significant transformations during last 150 years. For this thesis three studies were selected: city districts Karlín, Libeň and Vysočany. All three peripheries were originally separated areas of rural type which were located near centre of Prague. With the arrival of industry in the middle of 19th Century they turned into heavily industrial areas, in the beginning of 20th Century merged with the capital city, thus creating Great Prague. Many changes took place also with river Vltava regulations. During last 25 years the capital city is being modernized. This modernization is connected with additional changes in peripheries: old and unused factories are demolished and new buildings are built on their places or they are converted for other purposes. Because of this there are another impacts on the surrounding landscape. This issue also concerns industrial herritage: its main purpose is preservation and protection of former industrial buildings. The main goal of this thesis is description of these changes and their impact on the landscape with using maps, pictorial and written sources.

Šmídová, Markéta ; Váša, Ondřej (advisor) ; Marcelli, Miroslav (referee)
This thesis deals with the most dynamically evolving Prague district Karlin. In the context of the theory of Marc Augé about non-places, it primarily addresses the transformation of Karlin after the floods in 2002 and its consequences. For easier orientation in this area it is at first outlined the theory of Marc Augé and the history of Karlin. It is followed by the practical part, which refers to the production of non- places. Against the backdrop of the industrial heritage it refers to the conversion of industrial buildings and the creation of new administrative centers that show signs of non-places. Construction of new office centers started the process of new development of Karlin. The nature of this process and the direction Karlin is moving , is presented with concrete examples. I note in particular the changes in the structure of newly opened businesses - shops and catering facilities . In the last part of the thesis I mention the typical expression of non-place in Karlin - the underground and its surroundings. The aim is to point out that the conversion of Karlin relates to the production of non- places. Keywords : conversion, industrial buildings, Karlin, Marc Augé, non-places, office buildings, office centers, underground.

The main objektive of my thesis is a knowledge of social environment of prague district Karlín, one of the most dynamic part of inner Prague, which is undergoing a transformation of a physical, funcional and social structure. The concept of social environment is used in this work, whereby the social environment is consisted of a social structure and a social climate of a locality. By an analyse of the social, physical and funcional structure and a research of daily rhythms it tries to identify main pacemakers, to deeply learn about proceses and key moments during the day, which structurated the locality, and to capture social groups of users of the locality. The research is focused on three selected basic administrative units: 'Karlín - západ', 'Rohanský ostrov' and 'Za Invalidovnou'. Each of these localities has its own daily rhythm, which is structurated by the resident population and the temporarily present population, and different social environments, which influence each other, are dependent on each other and create the whole character of the prague district Karlín.The work tries to deepen and criticaly evaluate a current metodology. Gentrification of Karlín from the perspective of original residents
Vaněk, Vavřinec ; Novák, Arnošt (advisor) ; Orcígr, Václav (referee)
This MA thesis focuses on gentrification of Prague's Karlín district. It examines the issue through the optics of original residents and deals with the following questions: How do original residents perceive the change of their district? What is the impact of gentrification on their everyday lives? In order to answer these questions, qualitative research was used. The data was collected through interviews and participant and non-participant observation. The thesis provides an overview of leading theories of gentrification (such as Smith's Rent gap theory, Ley's consumer explanation theory, and Florida's creative class theory), which are applied to the obtained data. The theoretical chapter of the thesis summarizes these theories. This part also includes a brief history of the Karlín district and provides an overview of the existing research on Karlín's gentrification. The topics that appeared in the interviews with original residents form a structure of this chapter; these interviews are also quoted directly. Keywords: gentrification, Karlín, original residents, displacement

Niggunim in the Hasidic Tradition
Polohová, Ráchel ; Holubová, Markéta (advisor) ; Kohout, Ivan (referee)
This diploma thesis, titled "Niggunim in the Hasidic Tradition" deals with the musical tradition of the Hasidic Jews and its role in their daily lives and religious praxis. In this first part the reader is introduced to the topic, such as a general definition of a niggun. Included in the introductory chapters is a new typology of Hasidic niggunim, based on contemporary theories and arranged according to their usage in Hasidic practice. The basic modes in Jewish music are also explored (alongside known major and minor scales), and examples of each type are given. The next four chapters explore four dynasties whose musical activity is significant for the Hasidic tradition (HaBaD, Modzhits, Karlin, and Bratslav). This pivotal section includes a theoretical and musical analysis of the niggunim in each individual tradition according to dynasty. This thesis offers a definition of niggunim that encompasses the entire Hasidic tradition: a communicative medium and tool for expressing emotions in the context of the mystical practices of devekut and tikun olam. The unique perception of music by each of the four dynasties is also explored. The text of this thesis includes appendix A, which contains notational examples to accompany the text, and appendix B, which contains audio recordings in mp3 format.
From a Factory to the Business Park: Socio-spatial Change of Karlin
Úlehlová, Marie ; Vašát, Petr (advisor) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee)
The thesis deals with the socio-spatial transformation of the Prague district Karlin. This post- socialist and post-industrial developing dynamic district has changed its character in the recent decades. I follow on from the post-socialist theories that perceive the city of the so- called hybrid perspectives. These theories reveal it as a whole and take into account the everyday experience of the changing city. I describe these experiences of the inhabitants and visitors of Karlin with the concepts of social production and social construction, which combine the macroanalysis of social, economic and political influences and the microanalysis of individual living experience. I work on the assumption at the same time that the socio- spatial change manifests itself in the everyday activities of people and their rhythmicity which is the result of social construction and the production of urban space. The aim of the thesis is to describe the socio-spatial change through the example of Karlin Square with the analysis of rhythmicity. I use several qualitative methods of urban studies. In particular, I use the following methods: semi-structured interviews with mental mapping, participating observations and diaries
